Guitars

This is my first pedal steel, Emmylou. It's a Sho-Bud Maverick I bought at Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville on Valentine's Day, 1997.

This is the guitar I play now. It's a Sho-Bud single neck with three pedals and levers. Sweet, especially when plugged into a Peavey Nashville 1000 amp. I bought this at Billy Cooper's in Orange, Virginia on St. Patrick's Day, 1998.

My influences include:

Pedal steel icon, the late John Hughey.

John's captivating sounds can be heard on most recordings of Conway Twitty, Vince Gill, and, most recently, The Time Jumpers. As an example, click here for a YouTube clip of John at work.

My first instructor Barry Sless.

Barry started out with Cowboy Jazz in Baltimore but now plays both six-string and the pedal steel with the David Nelson Band.

My workshop instructor, the late Jeff Newman.

A member of the Pedal Steel Hall of Fame, Jeff produced a multitude of educational materials for his students.

And my current mentor, Susan Alcorn.

Author, poet, Dobro and pedal steel guitarist, composer, and improviser, Susan now concentrates on experimental music. A recent example of her work can be viewed here.
